Tourette Syndrome, (TS), is a neurological disorder characterised by involuntary, irresistible body movements and vocalizations. It is complex and individual in its effect – see “What is Tourette Syndrome?” for a more detailed description.
People with TS seek understanding and acceptance. This website is designed to educate and inform those wishing to know more about this complex disorder.

Invitation to participate in a research study using CBIT (Comprehensive behavioural intervention for tics)
Researchers in the USA have recently shown that an 8 session comprehensive behavioural intervention for tics (CBIT) is effective in reducing tic severity for many sufferers.
We would like to invite young people with Tourette Syndrome aged 9 – 17 years to register their interest in being involved in the first Australian trial using CBIT (or for their parents / carers to register interest on behalf of the young person). The study aims to explore whether reductions in tics that may occur after CBIT treatment are related to changes in brain activity.
Researchers from UNSW are carrying out the study and participation in the study includes going to Macquarie University, (in Ryde, NSW), where participants will be required to attend a brain wave testing at the start of the CBIT program and at the end (before and after receiving the CBIT intervention). The 8 CBIT sessions take place weekly and go for approximately 1 hour each.
Participation is voluntary, results obtained are completely confidential, and if a decision is made to take part, withdrawal from the study is allowed at any time.
If you are interested in learning more about this project, please contact info@tourette.org.au for more detailed information about the study.
Note that registering your interest does not commit you to being involved in the study.
More information about CBIT can be found by searching for “TSA CBIT Brochure” in your favourite internet search engine.
